Company History

Hawkins has never grown by accident. Each generation expanded the company through structured preparation, stronger technical capability, and the discipline to preserve the values that built it.

Today, Hawkins remains privately held and fourth-generation led. We answer to our name, not shareholders. That independence allows us to reinvest in our people, equipment, and safety while protecting the long-term stability that defines us.

Hawkins Over Time.

The Early Years

1885–1959

Hawkins’ story began with Parsons Construction in 1885. Earl and Kenneth Hawkins joined the company in the early 1900s and became co-owners by 1933, laying the foundation for Hawkins Construction. The company contributed to projects including Boys Town, a World War II ordnance plant, and Omaha’s Memorial Park while continuing to grow with a new headquarters in 1952.

New Generation

1960–1979

Hawkins Construction Company was incorporated in 1960. Under Fred Hawkins, the company expanded through major infrastructure projects, including the Missouri River wastewater treatment plant and OPPD North Omaha Power Station. Throughout the 1970s, Hawkins contributed to major civic, commercial, and defense projects across Omaha.

Growing Hawkins

1980-1994

The third generation took the helm in 1980 with leadership shared by Kim and Fred Jr. In 1983, Hawkins made major investments to build expertise in heavy-highway construction. As Hawkins grew, Kim and Fred adopted new operational practices to improve safety and efficiency.

Growing Hawkins

1995–2006

Major projects built included I-80 expansion from Omaha to Lincoln, the Durham Research Towers at UNMC, the West Dodge Expressway, Eppley Airport airfield paving programs, and First National’s technology park. Continued growth led to a new headquarters in 2002.

Expansion

2006–2020

Hawkins grew its regional impact with major infrastructure projects like the Council Bluffs Interstate program, Offutt Runway replacement and Lincoln South Beltway. Hawkins greatly expanded Water/Wastewater expertise, becoming the primary plant constructor for Omaha’s CSO program and regional critical projects.

Modern Hawkins

2021–Now

Fourth generation Chris Hawkins assumed top leadership in 2021. The Company continues to grow in a multi-state region while expanding lines of business in material supply and infrastructure management.
